Holston Hills is the architecture-nerd invitation in this batch. Ross greens, restored bunkers and almost a century of tournament history make this a very different proposition from “nice private club with good grass.” The course appears to ask for position and distance control long before it asks how far anybody hits driver. None of that helps if the foursome cannot get through the gate. This belongs high on the wish list, but the recommendation is about accepting a legitimate invitation—not pestering the club for a random Saturday tee time.

- Format: 18-hole historic championship course. Exact current total yardage/rating should come from the club’s current scorecard before publication.
- Design/history: Donald Ross course built in 1927. It hosted a PGA Tour event during Byron Nelson’s 1945 season, the 1982 PGA Cup, 2004 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur and, beginning in 2019, the Korn Ferry Tour’s Visit Knoxville Open.
- Recent work: Kris Spence led a bunker restoration beginning in June 2024 using Ross drawings, aerials and routing maps, with drainage and long-term maintenance improvements included.
