Oak Ridge has more personality than the generic private-club pitch. Scientists and engineers built the original course with hand tools, the club once hid the illegal bar supplies before raids, and now the finish asks you to carry a creek from the property's high point. That's a real story. The golf looks balanced rather than brutal: drivable and reachable chances mixed with tree chutes, false fronts and a couple of holes ready to put a snowman on the card. At 88 miles, we'd take the invite—especially with a member who knows which side of the greens not to miss.
OFFICIAL / HIGH-CONFIDENCE FACTS
- Oak Ridge Country Club is a private 18-hole club whose course began as a community/AEC project in 1947–49.
- Robert Cupp redesigned and renovated the course in the 1990s while retaining its earlier character.
- The official hole guide shows a par-72 course of 6,885 yards from the longest displayed tees.
- The course mixes demanding tree-lined drives, Bear Creek, false fronts and several scoring decisions. The signature par-5 18th plays from the property's high point and asks longer hitters whether they want to carry Bear Creek.
- Golf Digest lists 6,836 yards and 129 slope, a small conflict with the current official hole totals. The official card should control after direct confirmation.
